In 2013/2014, a new bridge was being constructed over the Greers ferry lake to replace the old bridge servicing the Hill Creek ramp.

Each bridge pier consisted of 12 foot diameter steel pipe, which they called a can. They would drive these cans into the lake bottom, then drill that same diameter much further into the bedrock before placing a reinforcing mesh inside and pouring concrete. This provides the strong and sturdy foundation needed to support the bridge.

Recovering a Drill Bit

Drill bit after being recovered.

Our company was called after the drilling rig had sheared the pin connecting the drill bit to the shank.

It was a quick dive, but I went into the can and descended onto the top of the drill bit. I reattached the drill shank to the bit with a new pin and the drill rig was able to extract the bit from the can.

Quick and easy dive, but a fun day trip nonetheless!
